1879-1958
Teacher, Writer and Translator

Born in Cascais on 9 July 1879, he studied at the Polytechnic School of Lisbon. He taught English and German, and was part of the teaching staff at the Bocage High School, in Setúbal, between 1904 and 1910. During the academic year 1907-1908, he interrupted his teaching career to carry out research work on a scholarship awarded by João Franco to the most outstanding high school teacher. He attended the university courses in Psychology, Phonetics and English Literature in London, and was taught by Professors Adams, Daniel Jones, Israel Gollancs and W. H. Hudson. Later, he travelled to Germany where he specialized in Experimental Phonetics and Methodology, under the supervision of Professors Panconzelli-Calzia, Viëtor and Max Walter. He systematized this experience in his traineeship report and in several conferences he gave, and always sought to put the knowledge acquired into practice.

With the establishment of the Republic of Portugal, Luiz Cardim was sent to Sá da Bandeira High School in Santarém, and he remained there for three years. During this period, he published the grammar entitled "Iniciação ao Estudo do Inglez" [Introduction to the Study of English]. Later, he was transferred to Gil Vicente High School in Lisbon, became its Rector and socialized with Leonardo Coimbra. Because he was scientifically suitable, he was nominated for several committees involved with the reform of secondary education, and invited to teach short courses, give conferences and translate.

At the University of Porto, he was responsible for the chairs of English Language and Literature, German Language and Literature and Comparative Grammar of German Languages, as well as the practical courses of English and German. In 1921, the government appointed him Ordinary Professor, a position which was then converted to Full Professor by the Reform of 1926.

By decision of the Board of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters – German Philology, on 19 April 1926 and appointed its second Librarian, a position he held from 23 October 1929 to 2 April 1930. He was elected Head of the Faculty – 3rd and last – after the extinction of the Faculty was announced, and held the position from 18 March 1930 to 31 July 1931.

After 1928, Luiz Cardim continued to teach in high schools and was at the same time the secretary of the Portuguese Social Prevention Association. In 1932, he asked to retire, but his request was denied. He did not teach again after this decision, continued to work in the administrative sector and continued his cultural and scientific production begun two decades before.

He died in Porto on 6 August 1958.
